E3 2008: PixelJunk Eden

The PixelJunk Eden Logo!

Ah, PixelJunk Eden, we’ve all undoubtably seen or heard something on PixelJunk Eden. From Q-Games and award-winning Japanese artist Baiyon, PixelJunk Eden allows players to grow gardens in up to 10 different levels.

You control a “Grimp,” derived from “grip” and “jump,” and you can cling, jump, swing and climb your way through the elegant gardens. Your main goal is to collect the Spectra in each garden, some have only 1 Spectra, other have 3, and there are probably gardens with over 5 Spectra! How would one go about reaching the Spectra?

Well with the Grimps, you can hit enemies by touching them or having your silk touch them and they release pollen into the air and go straight into the nearest pod. Your silk is a tether in which you swing from and it allows you to slingshot your way to higher or further away plants. Once the pollen has pollenated a pod, one would jump into the pod and it would grow a plant. The sizes vary and you must use the plants to traverse the gardens higher and reach the Spectra.

How does one find the Spectra? You could end up finding it when you’re going through the gardens, or you could do it strategically with your silk, when you’re near a Spectra, the silk will blip red in the direction you need to go to reach the Spectra, that way you know where to go and to focus your remaining time.

Yes, PixelJunk Eden is timed, if you don’t collect the Spectra within the time limit, you must restart. Something that’s nice is that the title screen is also a garden of it’s own. You manuever from gardens by collecting Spectra. If you collect all the Spectra, you can reach different parts of the title screen and visit different gardens. Each garden has 5 different levels and I’m not sure how one would go to seperate levels quite yet.

Trophy Support will make this game worthwhile even more so with the challenges they’ll put on the player. Rumble support allows players to feel what it’s like to jump, land, grip and fall through the vibrant gardens! You can play with up to 3 players in co-op mode, 3 players? That’s an interesting number, but I think it’s smart so you don’t have so many people goofing around. What else does PixelJunk Eden sport? Remote Play, yes, this allows you to play PixelJunk Eden on your PSP when you’re out of the house and on the go!
