When we last left our heroes, they had found May being chased by Crobats in Rusturf Tunnel. But that is only the least of their worries–every time a new melody awakens, the rogue is strong against the newly awakened melody–and Crobats are not weak to wind, light, or darkness.
But then a Weepinbell appears just as May’s power awakens–how will she fare in her first fight?

Episode 13: Winds of Change

“What does that have to do with those Crobats that were chasing me?” May was piqued.

“Every time a rogue Pokemon has appeared, someone has awakened the melody inside them.” Ash explained. “I have a feeling that Crobat flock will awaken your power too.”

“And how do you propose you find mine?” May started.

“Wait a second…usually the one that awakens is strong against whatever the rogue is–and with the elements of wind, darkness, and light left, none of those would be much help against a Flying Pokemon.” Brock interrupted. “Therefore, the Rockets would most likely attack again, only with something weak to one of the remaining elements.”

“Good point…” Misty added. “So Ash, what power does May hold, if at all?”

“Only one way to find out!” With that, Ash laid his hands on May as she closed her eyes to blank out the rumbling coming from outside. Take a melody…

Everyone winced as a box came clattering into the cave, shattering and unleashing its cargo, a giant Weepinbell, seconds after May began to glow a light green and sing Sweet harmony… A peridot ring appeared on her hand as the Weepinbell jumped into the air, intent on consuming at least one of the humans in acid.

“So May holds wind…” Misty mused as she led Hayley and Brock outside and into some bushes, leaving Ash, Brenna, and May to deal with the large plant leering over them inside the cave.

“So what do I do with this ring?” May stammered.

“Say ‘Melodic Power’ and something to do with wind….like I do with my fire powers.” Ash explained, as he lifted the hand with his ring into the air. “Melodic Power! Fever!”

Although his eyes were closed to protect them from the light surrounding him, he could feel himself changing–changing into something more powerful. Furthermore, he could not feel his own clothes on him any more, but he assumed that he was receiving new ones, ones better suited for driving away monsters and rogue Pokemon.

A deep blue shirt appeared first, followed by what looked like a red vest at first, but it soon lengthened itself to come down to Ash’s knees. Some gold swirls completed the look. Some black leggings appeared on his legs, with a pair of boots appearing on his feet afterwards. For the finishing touch, Ash’s cap turned into a red bandanna decorated with the same gold swirls his vest was.

“I’ll distract him while you transform!” Ash called to May before forming some red energy in his hands. “Ruby Spark!” The flame shaped jewels initially cut through the acid the Weepinbell was spewing; but before long, they became vaporized in the yellow-green goo.

May swallowed hard and lifted a hand in preparation to transform, but ran out of the way of an acid wave that nearly hit Ash. As she shuddered behind a stalagmite, she thought she heard Brenna call “Melodic Power! Freeze!”….

Back outside…

“Judgin’ from all that liquid I’m hearin’ in there, that Weepinbell’s really wanting to melt everyone with acid.” Hayley noted as she listened to the splashing and energy blasts coming from outside.

Brock motioned for the girls to follow him around to another bush that was nearby another entrance to the cave, which was overlooking a cliff. “It could be dangerous if any acid splashed out here, so here’s a safer spot.” With that, he fumbled for a sheet of paper and started folding it into what looked like a bullet shape.

Misty sighed. “Now’s not the time for a paper airplane…”

“Looks more like that little robot named Eve on TV.” Hayley interjected.

“It’s not a robot, it’s a paper bullet.” Brock explained as he folded the top of the “bullet” into a round shape, which he filled the inside with firestarter. “Next time Ash attacks, it will ignite the paper, and as the paper burns, the fire will damage the Weepinbell.”

“That’s some idea!” Hayley replied as she saw Ash send more flame shaped rubies at the Weepinbell. Brock’s paper bullet went flying into the cave seconds later, setting it and one of the Weepinbell’s tendrils ablaze. The Weepinbell raced out onto the cliff in a desprate attempt to find water, but found none.

May took that opportunity to lift the hand with her ring high. “Melodic Power! Storm!”

May smiled when she saw she was inside a protective cocoon of light green–now she was invulnerable to any acid. Some wind gusts formed a sparkly vest on top of her shirt, followed by several more wind gusts combining to form a skirt as her shirt turned a lighter green. Some gloves appeared on her hands, followed by some pale green tights on her legs and peridot colored boots on her feet to finish the look.

The Weepinbell was shocked when it saw May’s appearance and heaved more acid at her. But May called “Windy Mirror!”, making some wind gusts form a wall in front of her, reflecting the acid back on her opponent and shoving it backwards. The Weepinbell tried again, only to be blocked again and again by the odd shield.

Down below, Misty watched as May and the others cornered the giant Pokemon on the cliff. “I’ve never seen that attack before…”

“It looks like it’s deflecting attacks off of May and back onto the opponent.” Brock explained. “It should be enough to send it off the edge of the cliff…” A huge thud off in the distance confirmed his suspicions.

“Is it over?” Hayley asked as she strained to get a look up above.

May gasped as the cliff edge started to crack. “Oh no…” Ash was the first to hear May scream as the cliff edge broke away, sending her hurtling towards the rocky outcroppings below.

“Somebody do something!” Misty was panicked.

“If May lands on those rocks, she’ll be gravely injured at best!” Brenna agreed.

A guitar chord caught Ash’s attention, and he could hear Brock singing in Mew as he played a lullaby-like tune: Teireze cra ro treizei…

“How’s a song gonna help?” Misty snapped, annoyed that Brock was seemingly oblivious to one of their friends in danger.

“Looky there!” Hayley gasped as a bed of leaves started to form under May.

Brock just watched and sang as May safely landed on the platform of leaves and flowers he had created. Craro zeitei ro rei neu rosei… At this, some roses appeared on the edges of the platform so May wouldn’t fall off. Vale zetei, neu te ro tei cra, Some vines appeared from the ground, connecting the flowery platform to the ground. Rore croro zei reiva zeirei. With that, the flowery platform began a slow, gentle descent to the ground.

“I see…his lullaby’s commandin’ the flowers to keep May safe.” Hayley noted.

“I dunno if that’s a lullaby, but it’s putting me to sleep…” Ash sighed, fighting back a yawn all the while. He listened as the song continued.

Fale fale, Fane fa zeire! At this, the large rose in the center of the platform opened, allowing everyone to see that May was unharmed. Croro croneu tere cro roseleva, revaneu crote lele! As Brock hit the last high note to end the song, the platform gently touched the ground, allowing May to step off before it disappeared.

“Wow!” Brenna was impressed at Brock’s feat.

“That’s not the Mew language I know how to speak…” Ash noted.

Yah, era ne anci lange na Mew. Solo merodiia na tera sale Kaichou explained.

“She says that was an old form of Mew….and only the one that has the earth melody knows it.” Brenna translated. “Now only two melodies are left, and I have a theory as to who they could be…”
