The Rant Zone: What’s your favorite game story?

November 10, 2008 by SparklingBlue Features 5 Comments

Gaming stories have come a long way since the “save the girl” days. Now, they are breathtaking epics rivaled by movies and novels. And like movies and novels, some stories are great, and some are not so great.

But out of every game I have played in my gaming career–my favorite game story would have to be either Paper Mario or Chrono Trigger.

I chose Paper Mario because of the unique blend of classic “save Peach” with the “save the stars” of Super Mario RPG–and even how they let you play as Peach (I actually had an “I’m supposed to play now?” moment the first time I came to that first Peach part)

Chrono Trigger shines mainly in its character development–every character has their own personality, hopes, dreams, regrets, and wishes, which gave me a reason to care for each of them.

So which story do you remember most, and why? Tell me about it!

Happy gaming (and storytelling),

A few spring to mind. First there’s Final Fantasy VII (yeah, yeah, I know), when I played it I was about 10, and for a kid, that story dealt with some pretty mature themes, and completely drew me in. Final Fantasy VIII I also liked, and I loved how it ended. Then theres Knights of the Old Republic, which has one of the best twists in the history of video game stories. Hmm, I have others, but my mind’s gone blank!

FF8 for me started out great, then fell apart at the orphanage scene.

  3. Mark says:

Yeah, that bit was one of the weirder plot decisions in the Final Fantasy series, I must admit.

Oh! I know nobody will agree with me on this, but I have a soft spot for the story from Tenchu 2!

    Really? How so?
