BEGIN PREVIEW
“Okay…are our performers ready?” Wes asked. Misty stroked a note on her instrument in reply. Brock also hummed back the note to show he was in tune. “Are our gem snatchers ready?”
“Almost.” Ash interjected. “At what points in the song are our success points?”
“When he gets to the line about ‘I think I oughta warn ya’ you should have found the ruby in the storage room.” Wes replied. “Since you don’t have that far to go, and the song isn’t too long, you should be outside with Rui and I by the time our performers finish and the next act comes on.”
“Gotcha!” Ash smiled as he joined the others in the wings.
“Performers, into position!” Wes whispered. Brock quietly crept on the dark stage and flashed a thumbs up to Ash to signal them to get ready.
Brock sighed as his mic appeared on his face and nervously sang Do you ever miss the girl you left behind?, with the lights coming up on him as he hit the high note on “hind”.
“I didn’t know Brock could hit that high of a note!” Brenna whispered as she followed Ash out the door into the stage door hallway.
“His voice is surprisingly versatile.” Ash smiled as he waited for the others to meet him in the hallway.
Back on stage, a piano riff played and Brock started to sing Is the girl you left behind out there tonight romancin’?
Makin’ eyes at someone else and singin’, is she dancin’?
Only the girl you left behind is real when you’re sleepin’
Puts the teardrops in your eyes from secrets she is keepin’
Misty joined in with a fiddle riff as Brock continued with the verse: Happy just playin’ a tune and dance the whole night away
Hope the girl you left behind will be there for you someday
Lonely is the wind that blows, you know you’ll always miss her
Lonely is a lover’s heart, if only you could
Kiss her, kiss her, kiss her…
In the storage room…
“Where would the Rockets put a ruby in a stage storage room?” Leila sighed as she sifted through the mass of costumes and objects.
“You tell me.” Dawn agreed as she set aside some dresses.
“Hey, I found the sparkly we need!” Hayley called, holding a large red stone high for the others to see.
“How are we doing on time?” Ash opened the storage room door just in time to hear Brock sing the line Please don’t leave them too darn long, I think I oughtta warn ya!
“Perfect, now all we need to do is return to the wings and sneak outside.” May smiled. She waited for Hayley to pack the ruby away, then followed Ash back into the hallway.
“Misty’s doing great out there!” Dawn noted as she heard the notes a familiar fiddle playing a solo ringing in the hallway. She then heard Brock singing again, but the words were unintelligible from her location.
“Now the Rockets are singing too…” Leila smiled as the group rounded the corner towards the wings.
May gasped as she heard Brock and the Rockets sing the last bit of the song: You’ll (I’ll) find the girl
You’ll (I’ll) find the girl you (I) left behind
Tonight! Tonight! Tonight!
That’s right
Alright!
“Oh no…” Leila sighed over the applause…
