Guitar Hero World Tour outsells Rock Band 2

The latest NPD figures show that Guitar Hero World Tour outsold Rock Band 2 by 2:1. GHWT sold 3.4 million while Rock Band 2 only managed to sell 1.7 million in 2008 across all platforms.

While Rock Band 2 is the superior game Guitar Hero is a much more familiar franchise which obviously shows that a well known brand can outsell something better. The average consumer doesn’t know that the developers of Rock Band actually created the original 2 games in the franchise and that the game is now in different hand. Also the fact Activision had the sense to release it at the same time worldwide for all platforms while Haramonix decided to release the games slowly, starting with America and the Xbox 360 and slowly go from there.

From that stand point this isn’t actually a shocker, can’t say I was expecting Rock Band to sell more than Guitar Hero, but by 2:1? I thought it wouldn’t be that far behind. Guess I was wrong.
