The Next Zelda: December Recap

While out and about on my online rambles today, I saw earthbounding had a new video…

December Recap

What we learn:

–Aonuma-san has been busy throughout the second half of November and into December–he has spoken to Eurogamer, GameSpot, IGN, and Iwata Asks to name a few sources
–Aonuma-san’s main focus in making a Zelda game is how unique the finished product will be–how he can set the new game apart from the rest of the series.
–He then listed what made every Zelda game unique (eg. the boat in Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass, the mature plot in Twilight Princess, and the train in Spirit Tracks, to name some) But what could the unique element in New Zelda Wii be? Could it be a change more drastic than the train?
–Another aspect of the series that Aonuma-san believes adds to its enduring popularity is its accessibility–the entire Zelda team doesn’t want the player frustrated. Knowing this, New Zelda Wii could have the Super Guide (Miyamoto-sama has said future games will have it)
–A third aspect that Aonuma-san emphasized was a world full of surprises for the player to explore. He did mention dungeons in this discussion, so it is likely New Zelda Wii will still have dungeons to explore. He also mentioned how technology’s evolution was for the series’ benefit–he takes gamer feedback seriously!
–Next, Aonuma talked about how a Zelda game is made from start to finish–the team first bats around ideas for experiences, then they build the gameplay and the story around the experiences–this is way remaking a game such as Ocarina of Time is harder than it sounds–Aonuma believes a remake would destroy the emotional attachment the player had to the game–but he said he would think about it more, so all hope isn’t lost yet
–He also hinted at the possibility of Link flying (whether by wings or via plane) in the future. Zelda Wii could have a plane, but Miyamoto dismissed the idea last year–but the “Link flying” idea isn’t off the table, and a non-motorized plane is a possibility. Feathers and actual wings are another idea.
–Aonuma’s team isn’t afraid of adding technology to the Zeldaverse–plus, Link has flown before in Twilight Princess
–Wii Motion Plus could play a huge role in New Zelda Wii’s experience, as mentioned previously–how it will work will be revealed at E3
–It seems like Miyamoto isn’t doing much this time around–Aonuma-san says that Miyamoto helms almost all first party releases–making Aonuma the true man behind Zelda. However, Miyamoto does lend his support to Zelda when he can.
–If there is any rivalry between Miyamoto and Aonuma, it is likely during the creative process–ultimately, Miyamoto prevails, since he has to tell the director (Aonuma), what to do.
–The game’s progress is on schedule as of this month–as for concerned that New Zelda Wii would be cell shaded, Aonuma says that cell shaded graphics are better suited for handhelds
–The classic secret discovery noise will be back in New Zelda Wii, as will the classic “ba-da-da-da!”
–New Zelda Wii could have an instrument, since Spirit Tracks has panpipes.
–As for that rumor about the next console being leaked, if true, New Console could play games, DVDs, and Blu-Ray, and would supposedly be released Q3 2010–something akin to the DS and the DSi You would supposedly be able to trade your Wii for New Console at half price–so could New Zelda Wii also be on New Console?
–Nintendo Power also had some interesting info–with their 250th issue releasing soon, could we see a glimpse of New Zelda Wii or New Console before E3? This would mean New Zelda Wii would be availiable on both the Wii and New Console.

Stay tuned for new info as I find it.

Happy gaming,
SparklingBlue
