E3 10: Supremacy MMA Impresssions

(My name is Philip and I am an “Intern” for Monstervine. I go to UCSD and am a Psychology Major. The more you know)

Yesterday Will and I got our first hand look at Supremacy MMA through a behind-closed-doors interview with the 505 Games developers at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). The game is based on, naturally, mixed martial arts fighting styles and utilizes all the notable fighters that are current to UFC. The game was only at the beta testing stage, though already I could tell the attention to detail that was put into the fighting techniques and the graphical engine used to model the characters. Though not a UFC fan, I will attempt to stay true in explaining the intentions of the game and its design.

Like the previous installments to the MMA series, Supremacy MMA does not adhere to the typical “sports vibe”, such as titles from EA Sports. Instead, through the various combos brought through mixed martial arts, the game praises the culture and the art of fighting, where different martial arts styles showcase various cultural influences, such as Muay Thai. For instance, the multiplayer element of the experience brings in an assortment of stages for the one-on-one matches and various fighters recognizable to fans of the series and fans of the actual championship. Multiplayer expresses the unrestrained creativity of the fighting techniques that are pitted against each other, and this allows players to strategize on certain combos to get the upper hand over opponents, such as performing fakes to confuse and parries in combat. Arena mode contrasts styles of fighting based on the fighters and the environment (i.e crowds). Victory over your opponent naturally requires mastery over multiple techniques to best adversaries.

The game is still in early development and most information regarding the new features was classified, so there was not much opportunity to inquire more into the design. Keep a close eye on more developments in E3 as coverage continues tomorrow.
