Indiecade 10: Retro/Grade Hands-On Impressions

Matt Gilgenbach and the folks over at 24 Caret Games created a space shooter game played entirely backwards. That’s right backwards. Apparently it wasn’t enough that your character, Rick Rocket, saved the universe in an epic battle but now you have to do it again to undo the space-time continuum.

In a sense, Retro/Grade explores traditional rails shooter gameplay in a new perspective. Players will be tasked with dodging enemy projectiles while at the same time positioning their ship in the correct place to fire their lasers when their shots inevitably come back to them. Moreso, the rhythm based nature of Retro/Grade makes it possible to play the entire game with a guitar controller. In the demo, you move the ship up and down by switching between the colored frets and strum in time to absorb the laser shots. Eventually, the game adds in enemy shots (which you have to avoid) and turns into a frantic experience.

Currently its set for release on the Playstation Network, for more information check out Retro/Grade’s website or the developers page.
