Publisher Activision has announced the first official convention for its beloved cash cow, Call of Duty XP 11. It will take place over Labor Day weekend, Sept 2 and 3, and will cost $150 to attend.
Highlights for the event includes the first premiere of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer, hands-on with MW3’s MP and Spec Ops survival modes, a paintball recreation of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s map Scrapyard, a come to life version of MW2’s Spec Ops trial ‘The Pit,’ the detailing of Call of Duty Elite subscription, and an armory of real life weapons from the series.
Think of it like a traditional convention and you can sort of get the jist of it. There will also be developer panels, Q&A sessions, contests, tournaments, with a 4-player tournament running a $1 million dollar prize pool. Proceeds for the ticket sales, $150, will all go towards The Call of Duty Endowment, Activision’s non profit organization helping to ease veterans back into civilian life.
If you cannot make it to the event, the publisher has ensured there will be a constant stream of video online and on television (probably a on-demand program with a major cable/satellite company). No details if this will be free to watch or will include a fee, much akin to Blizzcon.
Its no surprise Activision decided to follow the footsteps of its subsidiary partner Blizzard in engaging with its community and generate good PR for its franchise, only if its just for one game.
