The “free-to-play” model is mentioned a lot these days, and now, Star Wars: The Old Republic is no stranger to the model. Bioware will roll out a free-to-play option for their Star Wars MMO starting this fall, giving their current subscribers, and future players a chance to play The Old Republic without a subscription fee, according to a report by PC Gamer.
The subscription model is still available for players who want unrestricted access to the game. Bioware will introduce “Cartel Coins,” The Old Republic’s new virtual currency system, which subscribers will receive on a monthly basis. “Cartel Coins” are used to purchase valuable in-game items.
Free-to-play will allow players to experience the first 50 levels. From there, advanced player features, and additional content are restricted. However, some restrictions can be lifted with “Cartel Coins.”
“Cartel coins” are purchasable with real money. Those who subscribe to The Old Republic before the free-to-play model goes live will earn a monthly allowance.
In order to pull in new players for the free-to-play model, The Old Republic will go on sale for $14.99 USD, including a free one-month subscription, in August.
