‘Jotun’ Developers Reveal Release Date of Next Title, ‘Sundered’, Preparing Kickstarter Campaign

The creative minds behind 2015’s Jotun have announced a July 2017 release for their next title, Sundered, for PlayStation 4 and PC (Win/Mac/Linux). Sundered developers, Thunder Lotus, are also taking a creative approach to polishing and play-testing their upcoming game, with a forthcoming Kickstarter campaign that will offer backers early access to Sundered in the months ahead.

Announced alongside Sony in September, Sundered drops players into the role of Eshe, whom the developer describes as “a scavenger who becomes trapped in strange sandstorm which drags her into a mysterious cavern,” in a world befallen by a cataclysmic event called the Terror. Carrying on the hallmarks of Jotun, Sundered is meticulously hand drawn and animated, and promises large-scale boss encounters. Described as a “metroidvania” game “teeming with eldritch horrors,” Sundered is a side-scrolling adventure, unlike the more isometric Jotun.

Sundered‘s Kickstarter kicks off on Monday, January 16th, seeking to raise $25,000 CAD, however Thunder Lotus is quite upfront with the campaign’s primary objective of play-testing Sundered, a clever approach that benefitted the development of Jotun during its Kickstarter run. Sundered is primarily funded by Jotun revenues and the Canadian Media Fund, and the developer has committed all Kickstarter campaign funds to the game’s budget as well. Thunder Lotus’ partnership with Sony extends only to marketing, and appears to lend itself to the console version’s launch exclusivity on the PlayStation 4.
