Platinum Games’ Scalebound cancelled, publisher Microsoft cuts its losses

Xbox One exclusive action role-playing game ‘Scalebound‘, directed by Hideki Kamiya of Okami and Bayonetta fame, has been canceled by Microsoft Studios, the publisher has confirmed. In development at Platinum Games since 2013, the studio had reportedly wanted to develop Scalebound since the studio’s inception in 2006. While the reasoning behind the cancellation is left unclear, Microsoft Studios has decided to cut its losses.

A statement provided by a Microsoft spokesperson to MonsterVine read, “After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for “Scalebound.” We’re working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including “Halo Wars 2,” “Crackdown 3,” “State of Decay 2,” “Sea of Thieves” and other great experiences.”

While Microsoft Studios looks ahead to 2017, Platinum Games as well continues development on its other projects, including Nier: Automata with publisher Square Enix.

Scalebound featured protagonist ‘Drew’ and his companion dragon ‘Thuban’ working together in what would have been Platinum Games’ first published action role-playing game, as the developer is better known for its action titles like Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Bayonetta. With Drew under direct player control, Thuban would automatically assist in combat, as well as take direction from Drew, via the player.

Announced by Microsoft at E3 in 2014, Scalebound was to be released in 2016, before being pushed to 2017 and inevitably cancelled.
