Bethseda has announced new details about the newly revealed The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The official company Twitter account made mention that the game will not use the same engine that powered its earlier franchises, Fallout 3 and The Elder Scolls IV: Oblivion.

The teaser trailer made mention of an evil power that has recently resurfaced after being considered a forgotten legend. The trailer voiced a trembling concern towards the incoming menace, “They’re already here. The Elder Scrolls told of their return. Their defeat was merely a delay. From the time after Oblivion opened, when the sons of Skyrim would spill their own blood.”

Details for the game are expected soon with a cover story in the February issue of Game Informer.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will release November 11, 2011 for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.

Sorta clever. In an effort to promote Bethesda Softworks latest title, Fallout: New Vegas, overseas – the company has engaged in mocking the conventional themes found in Japanese role playing games. In an advert in which a couple of angry picketers protest, the translated message spells out a different story. These messages range from, “A game where you just follow the scenario is like living life on rails,” to “What’s the point of playing again if there’s no change to the story,” and my favorite “When did games become something that you watch?”

Sure to be a head turner for heated debate, we can also say to Bethesda, “Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter will still outsell your game in Japan.”

From id software, Rage is a promising title that will be released in 2011.

Rage is a promising title that will hit shelves in 2011 on the Windows PC, Mac, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. It is developed by id software, also known for their titles such as Doom and Quake, and published by Bethesda Softworks, famous for RPG titles such as Elder Scrolls Oblivion and more recently Fallout 3.

The first thing you’ll probably notice about Rage is its stellar graphical prowess—Rage looks amazing. The environments are highly rendered and expansive, and being able to drive around in an RC bomb car while you see the landscapes sights just allows the player to appreciate how great the graphics are that much more.

In Rage, an asteroid has hit the earth in a distant future. The setting is akin to Fallout 3; a post-apocalyptic world. You take on the role as a survivor of the Ark, which was a group of people that planned to preserve themselves so that they would be able to rebuild the world following the destruction of the asteroid.  Bandits and mutants ravage the barren world that you must explore as a sole survivor. As a member of the Ark, it is your duty to try to preserve society, however a government agency known as the Authority stands in your way—they have paid assassin’s a great deal of money in order to prevent anyone from rebuilding civilization for unknown reasons.

Ready to kick some mutant ass?

Rage is more of a first person shooter than a RPG; however it still retains some RPG characteristics, such as looting corpses for items and currency and making certain decisions. In combat you can switch to any weapon on the fly by opening up a radial menu. There is also a cover mechanic during combat. You won’t just be using guns, though; you can also use a boomerang during combat as well as a weapon that fires electro bolts. Players will be able to upgrade their vehicle as they win races, as well as earning respect from others. The RC bomb car just isn’t to traverse the land and race, though; it is also used during sections of combat. While in your car, you must swerve and dodge oncoming fire while retaliating all at the same time, providing an exhilarating experience. Enemy AI is impressive— while on foot, they will slide and shimmy to get in your face and kill you, so you must stay on your toes.

The environment is open ended, allowing the player to simply drive through the wasteland while killing bandits and mutants for hours and selling loot, or conversing with travellers in order to advance in the main story. The release of Rage feels close but also so far away—I don’t know about you, but I’m eagerly awaiting more news on this title. Stay tuned for more info as we approach a release date.

After years of publisher troubles, WET is finally about to see its release on September 15. The stylishly blood laden game by A2M has released a demo and I had a chance to check out the work-in-progress.

Right from the title screen, WET boasts a heavy emphasis on style and presentation. The overall feel is a 70’s action movie flick complete with a film grain filter. Effectively, WET’s aesthetic execution remarks the game as eccentric and over the top. At its best, WET can compare to a Quentin Tarantino directed movie; its nature is reminiscent of Kill Bill.

The main protagonist, Rubi, is a wetwork assassin seeking to dispatch justice on her targets. She is deliciously masterful in her acrobatic style, allowing her to contort her body in various ways to eliminate her enemies. Complementing this arsenal of tricks, Rubi excels in running up walls, dropping down head first from ladders, and other impossible feats.

At the gameplay’s forefront, combat is a combination of shooter, melee, and platform elements interwoven into one seemingly fluid chain. The game is played in a third person perspective; however the actual shooter aspect places the player in a slow-motion bullet time sequence. From there on, you can pan the camera whilst firing at multiple enemies. The incentive of doing this is to gain a high number score through racking up combos and obtaining multipliers. There’s inherently a lot of wanton killing involved as explored with WET’s Rubi Vision. The screen turns into an eye glazed red and your objective is to cut through massive waves of enemies to progress to the end. It’s certainly a nice change of pace if you want to engage in simple and mindless decapitations.

WET is very linear and scripted in its pacing but that’s not necessarily bad. The story progresses as you move along each level. However, the game also switches into a free form sandbox mode and you will have to complete a certain objective within a confined playground. The game provides plenty of quicktime events during tense and climatic moments of the story such as a car chase sequence.

If anything, WET has its own brand of style and flavor. The cynic in me is wary of the controls and an uneasy lack of depth due its linear nature but the optimist in me is too blind sighted at the fact that a strangely attractive estrogen filled assassin can inflict a glorious amount of brutality on her victims.

The last of the five planned downloadable content expansions, Mothership Zeta, will be coming Monday, August 3 for the Xbox 360 and Games for Windows platform said developer Bethseda.

Priced at a fantastic 800 Microsoft Points ($10), players will be able to explore a gigantic alien mothership and solve the intricate mysteries of said mothership. Bethseda sent out a fact sheet detailing the new items, locations, and story components in the expansion.

All five downloadable content expansions will be bundled alongside a Fallout 3 ‘Game of the Year’ edition due to hit stores in October for $59.99 on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 and $49.99 on PC.

    Mothership Zeta Fact Sheet

DESCRIPTION: Defy hostile alien abductors and fight your way off of the massive Mothership Zeta, orbiting Earth miles above the Capital Wasteland. Mothership Zeta takes Fallout 3 in an entirely new direction – outer space. Meet new characters and join with them in a desperate bid to escape the Aliens’ clutches. To do so, you’ll wield powerful new weapons, like the Alien Atomizer, Alien Disintegrator, and Drone Cannon, and deck yourself out in brand new outfits, like the Gemini-Era Spacesuit and even Samurai Armor.

STORY: A strange Alien signal is being broadcast throughout the Capital Wasteland, originating from a crashed UFO. Is it a distress call, or something far more sinister? That question is answered when you find yourself beamed aboard an enormous Alien spacecraft, with only one alternative – to fight your way to the bridge of the ship and secure your escape.

    KEY FEATURES:

        * Find and exploit new and destructive alien technology, like the Alien Atomizer and Drone Cannon.
* Explore the vast Mothership and learn the secrets of the Aliens’ master plan.
* Thwart the Aliens’ attempt to stop your escape, and take over the Alien ship before it wreaks havoc on the unsuspecting Earth below.
* Fight against the Alien Invaders, their robot drones, and turn their own horrible experiments against them.
* Ally yourself with an unexpected array of characters, both from the Capital Wasteland and from Earth’s past.
