One of my favorite series is the Mana series…but it was the PSX entry in the series, Legend of Mana; that really sparked my interest in the series.
The reason? So much to do, three different storylines, and a great cast of characters. I particularly liked the Eleazul and Pearl storyline the best, especially once you learned their true roles.
But it was harvesting fruits, making your own weapons, catching Mana spirits, and just plain exploring that made it fun.
Of all the stuff the game offered, catching Mana spirits was the most fun.
For those of you that haven’t played the game before, your spells are cast via magic instruments, and early in the game, you are shown how to make the magic instruments and how to catch Mana spirits with them (so you can use the coins they drop when you catch them to make more instruments)
That said, you can usually tell where they are when the world music fades out and stops when you reach a dead end. At that point, you’ll see the spirit. (although I vaguely remember seeing two spirits on one expedition)
At that point you pick one of the instruments you’re carrying and a song to play on it. The more instruments in your band, the more likely you are to catch the spirit. But for me, all I needed was a flute and the Mysterious melody to catch the bulk of my spirits.
To this day, I comb used game bins, game exchanges, and even garage sales in search of a copy, so I can go spirit hunting again.
Happy gaming,
