Our last and final update from the Blizzcon convention revolves around an announcement from the Starcraft II developers to make their upcoming RTS sequel a trilogy of separate games, each to concentrate on one of the universe’s three factions.
The first game will consist of the Terran campaign and is to be titled: Terran: Wings of Liberty.
The second Zerg focused game will be “Zerg: Heart of the Swarm,” and the third game being “Protoss: Legacy of the Void.”
“[The second and third games] will be like expansion packs, but we really want them to feel like standalone products,”
Each campaign is touted to be very different with the Zerg campaign to incorporate RPG elements. The Protoss campaign will differentiate itself by featuring the usage of diplomacy. And the Terran campaign will have a Protoss mini-campaign.
The campaigns are planned with epic storylines with enough content to justify a full release, and as a consquence will feature more in-game cinematics and story content.
Blizzard highly noted that the multiplayer component of Starcraft II will be unchanged by the splitting of campaigns in single player. However some units in the game will be unique to the campaigns and will not be playable in multiplayer.
The developers believe the decision was necessary in order to maintain the quality of the full product, with alternatives being a long delay of the game or scaling back of the campaigns.
