Come one, come all I have a story to tell. One involving a man and a multi-national company called Square-Enix. It started one fateful day when his email inbox was spammed by things quite strange. Mail, lots of it about a game (Final Fantasy XI) he had never played. He thought it was bad so the man got sad and sued Square Enix away.
Ok, it wasn’t really quite as vague as that, but technically that is what happened. Item Dealers were using the mans email address to create PlayOnline accounts for money trading purposes which were going to be banned and then re-registered for the next lot of trading. This apparently flooded the email account with re-registration mail. Apparently he has no connection to Square-Enix or FFXI at all.
He complained to Square-Enix to ask about the all the junk mail. But they just refused stated that they can’t just stop sending emails to one certain address. Instead of doing the logically thing and just block the mail from that Square-Enix address, he sued them. In 2007, he went to a small claims court and filed a law suit, Square-Enix appealed, but was denied. In court the man defended himself and won the case earning 50,00yen ($559)
Quite a bit of effort just for $559, but oh well. It just proves that the Japanese can be lawsuit crazy when they want to be. But then again, if this was America he probably would of gotten so much more.
