The Making Of: PlayStation

A SNES with a CD-ROM Drive!

So some people out there are very uneducated about how Sony’s PlayStation came to be and how it was a deal with Nintendo gone bad. But they should not fear any longer! Quite possibly the best article I’ve read about how PlayStation came from a SNES with a built-in CD-ROM drive derived from the genius brain of Ken Kutaragi.

Read about how the insides of the PlayStation came together to bring “3D real-time” graphics and what games started it all. Like Ridge Racer.

“It was almost an afterthought. One of the men demonstrating it asked, since I was there, would I like them to show me another game they’re working on? ‘Yeah, sure’, I said. ‘What’s it called?’ ‘It’s called Tekken’.”

Check out some photos of Phil Harrison with hair, iterations of the PS Logo and controller, and even of Polygon Man.

EDGE has an outstanding editorial explaining as best as it can on how all this Sony PlayStation business went down:

Very interesting–and I didn’t know the PSX logo went through so many evolutions between birth and launch
