Licenses to make movies based on video games have become popular in the recent years. Asteroids is no exception.
Universal has apparently won a bidding war over three other studios to secure the rights for the thirty-year old Atari franchise. Lorenzo di Bonaventura (of Constantine, Doom, Transformers, G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra) will be producing while Matthew Lopez (Bedtime Stories, Race to Witch Mountain) has been asked to write the script.
Given that Asteroids is one of the most recognizable video game franchises in the world, the void of any plot or action that could be easily turned into a movie leaves one skeptical on how it will turn out.
