E3 10: The Force Unleashed Preview

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, released two years ago, was received with mixed critical reception. However LucasArts seems to be taking what the players said very seriously, so we can be assured that they will greatly expand and improve upon its predecessor.

Players will reprise the role of Darth Vader’s apprentice, Starkiller. Apparently Starkiller was cloned despite sacrificing himself in the previous game. Now Starkiller is working towards defeating his former master.

Dismemberment was something that players had asked for in the first game, and it appears that LucasArts has listened and plans on implementing this in The Force Unleashed 2. Another new addition is the addition of the Jedi Mind Trick—which allows the player to trick enemies into fighting one another or harm themselves. Players can also use Force Fury at times. There will even be puzzles thrown in to break up the constant combat. For example, players will have to use the force to move pedestals at a point in the game in order to progress, or use their saber throw to hit a switch.

As far as combat goes, LucasArts has worked hard in order to improve in areas where the first didn’t deliver—namely, the enemy diversity. In the first game, players didn’t need much strategy to defeat each of its foes, and there were many enemies as well. In The Force Unleashed 2, there will be fewer enemies but they will be a lot more diverse and require more specific strategies to take out.

The Force Unleashed 2 has a set release date of October 26th, 2010.
