The past few days have been rough for Sony. After announcing that the PlayStation Network has been shut down for an unspecified amount of time, Sony admitted that it was do to a security breach into their network. However, Sony’s announcement today, is much more unsettling for PSN users.
It appears whoever breached their system, may have obtained private information from PSN users, which include names, home address, and passwords. For those who use credit cards for the PlayStation Store, Sony said that the culprit possibely got a hold of that information as well.
Here is an excerpt from an email that Sony will send out to all users soon:
“Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out he possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expir will bation date may have been obtained.”
If you are one of the PSN users, I strongly encourage you to head on over to the PlayStaion Blog, which has more details on the incident, and the full email that will be sent out soon.
