Naughty Dog celebrated the opening of its 30th Anniversary Art Exhibit at the Gallery Nucelus in Alhambra, CA this past weekend. Fans of Naughty Dog lined up at the venue to take part in the evening reception and it was a full house all around. Attendees of the event had the opportunity to buy The Art of Naughty Dog artbook and have it signed by the Naughty Dog team. A Limited Edition version was also available, retailing for $99.99.
The exhibit will be open for the next two weeks and feature a concept art workshop and 3D character modeling workshop to attend. Its highly recommended for anyone wanting an inside look into the world of video game development from a veteran studio with distinguished pedigree.
I managed to find down Bob Rafei, the first Naughty Dog employee, at the event and gave my thanks for being an inspiration to my childhood. Its often rare to meet one of your childhood heroes in person, so it was a very memorable moment for me. Rafei is currently working on Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric at Big Red Button Entertainment.
Another interesting find about the Naughty Dog art exhibit is the studio’s willingness to open up about their undeveloped projects, including Jak 4 and an untitled science fiction game – which is detailed further in the artbook. The exhibit also showcases pieces of Naughty Dog’s storied history – a Project Wombat demo reel, the original Jak move list from Jak and Daxter, and the studio’s first game – Math Jam.
While the two co-founders, Jason Rubin and Andy Gavin, were not in attendance at the opening reception, their vision of “hiring the best people” and “creating quality video games” has certainly left an impact upon the studio’s culture and its rise to prominence.
A number of prints, t-shirts, and art pieces can be found for sale on the Gallery Nucleus website.
