Developed by Alienworks, Highway Blossoms is an upcoming yuri visual novel game based around Americana culture, alongside music, and romance. A playable demo was provided by publisher Sekai Project, which does a good job of showing off what the game will really be about.
Highway Blossoms revolves around Amber and Marina, two girls travelling through North America, as they bond with one another in numerous meaningful ways. As far as I can tell from the demo, the game has no choices or diverging paths, making it a relaxing and simple experience.
The demo starts with Amber and Marina preparing to traverse a valley called “Angel’s Landing”. The game goes into great detail about their clothing and hiking equipment, complementing the fantastic visuals rather nicely. Each illustration is vibrant and well-drawn, from the character portraits that appear during dialogue, to the very appealing natural backgrounds.
Sometimes a conversation will lead to a full-screen illustration, normally with a minor form of animation on background object. These illustrations are often full of life, as the colors, slight movement, and detail highlights the emotion in the dialogue.
The piece of story given in the demo is pretty simple, with the two girls travelling while discussing their feelings, both about their lives, and one another. Though certain things are unclear, like an unknown awkward event between the two characters prior to the demo, the provided narrative is more than enough to get a feeling for what the game will be about.
Overall, while Highway Blossoms’s demo isn’t very long, it does its job in giving you a taste of what the game will feel like. The preview shows that the game will be deeply focused on the personal and intimate journey that Amber and Marina will take, and how they will change as a result of it.
