CD Projekt RED’s open world fantasy RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was highly praised for many reasons, one of which was a mini-game called Gwent.
Gwent is a strategic card game that became so popular, some players joked the rest of the game was side content to Gwent. It was an unexpected hit, far more beloved than any other Witcher mini-games. CD Projekt RED later released physical Gwent decks with The Witcher 3’s expansions, which were very well-received by fans.
The demand for more Gwent was so high, it’s little surprise the developer has now transformed it into a standalone digital game.
Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is coming to the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. No physical edition of Gwent is planned at the moment.
It will feature cross-platform multiplayer as well as a single-player campaign mode, and it will be free-to-play with microtransactions. The nature of the microtransactions is not known yet.
However, if you want to be among the first people to play Gwent and see how the standalone game compares to The Witcher 3’s mini-game, you can sign up for the beta test here.
The beta, which focuses on the multiplayer aspect, will become available in September 2016 for the Xbox One and PC. A PS4 version of the beta is planned to follow at a later date. There is no release date yet, as the official FAQ promises the beta will end “when the game is feature-rich, polished, and tested sufficiently.”
Gwent: The Witcher Card Game will include much more content than the version from The Witcher 3, which is why it needs a beta test despite being based on a mini-game that already exists. Additionally, CD Projekt RED plans to add new content as time goes on.
Whether you’ve played countless hours of Gwent within The Witcher 3, or you’re hearing about it for the first time, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is intended to be a fun, fast-paced card game anyone can enjoy.
So what do you say? Are you ready to play some Gwent?
