Ten Characters Who Should Be In Marvel vs Capcom Infinite

The announcement of Marvel vs Capcom Infinite has excited me like few other announcements have. As a major fanboy of both Marvel and Capcom, the series has always appealed to me more than any other fighting game. With the announcement trailer comes the most exciting phase in fighting game development: character speculation. So let’s talk about which characters I hope to see in Marvel vs Capcom Infinite.

Ground Rules: No characters that were in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, or characters who have been introduced to the MCU through a movie will be included, due to the game’s already rumored focus on the MCU.

silvercody

Honorable Mentions – Silver Surfer and Cody

The Silver Surfer was actually supposed to be in Marvel vs Capcom 3, but was cut due to the difficulties behind making his surfboard work. Now that we’re back to the 2v2 style of VS game, maybe Capcom can make Silver Surfer the way they meant to. As a major player in the original Infinity Gauntlet story, Surfer almost has the right to appear over most characters. His inclusion would also be a sign of goodwill towards fans of the Fantastic 4, as the rumours surrounding their exclusion. Surfer would have a truly unique playstyle, so here’s hoping he glides into the game.

As for Cody, he already has an established playstyle from previous Street Fighter games, as you can read about on my previous Street Fighter Feature. Cody would be able to represent both Street Fighter and Final Fight, covering two Capcom franchises. His beat-em-up-based fighting style would also prove to stand out amongst the other Street Fighter characters, making him more valuable than the typical Ryu clone.

talbain

10.) Jon Talbain

Anyone can tell you that it’s tough to be a fan of Darkstalkers (or Vampire Saviour for some of you). The franchise is in a weird limbo, as it’s not profitable enough to receive new games, but has a strong enough cult following that keeps it alive. One of the most iconic characters from the franchise is Jon Talbain, a werewolf who struggles to stay as human as possible.

Design-wise, Talbain fits right in with the Marvel aesthetic, and would be an interesting counterpart to Wolverine. Amaterasu had a DLC costume in Marvel vs Capcom 3 based on Talbain and his color palette, so he hasn’t been entirely forgotten by Capcom. His inclusion would also spur Darkstalkers fans, showing Capcom the amount of fan support the series really has.

cable

9.) Cable

This pick is more biased than others, as I have a personal favoritism for Cable. Nonetheless, Cable would be a perfect character for Infinite‘s 2v2 system. Circumventing a convoluted backstory, Cable is more or less the part-robotic son of Cyclops and Jean Grey from the future. He’s known for big guns, endless pockets, and his odd friendship with Deadpool.

Cable would play in a way that’s similar to his Marvel vs Capcom 2 incarnation, but with a greater focus on heavy rushing. Cable could use his endless guns to blast enemies from across the screen, with bombs and weapons from his countless pouches to provide some diversity, similar to how Chris Redfield plays. Cable would also serve as some solid marketing for Deadpool 2, as he’s said to be in the movie.

leon

8.) Leon Kennedy

In my experience, there are two types of Resident Evil fans: those who prefer Chris, and those who prefer Leon. I’m one of the latter, as Resident Evil 2 is my favorite in the series, and the favorite of many others. After surviving the Raccoon City zombie outbreak, rookie cop Leon Kennedy goes on an adventure to save the President’s daughter from a village of cultists with a sinister secret.

Naturally, Leon would play in a similar way to Chris Redfield, but with different weapons, and a heavier focus on Resident Evil mechanics. Using weapons from Resident Evil 4, Leon would be a long range fighter using guns ranging from his default pistol, to the hard-hitting Broken Butterfly. To make things more ridiculous, Leon could throw harpoons, as seen in Resident Evil 4, with a knife-rush attack based on his battle with Krauser. Leon could even use Green Herbs to heal himself slightly, like Jill in Marvel vs Capcom 2.

blade

7.) Blade

Blade could possibly be the most forgotten Marvel character, purely because so few people know he’s a Marvel character. After two great movies and one poor one, Blade embedded himself into the minds of people both inside and outside of the Marvel fanbase. To boil his story down, Blade’s mother is bit by a vampire, making him a “Daywalker”, a half-vampire who can survive in the daylight. Blade hunts down supernatural threats, including the man who bit and killed his mother.

Blade has a plethora of weapons at his command, from a number of swords and throwing-knives to more supernatural weapons, like a stake and cross. Blade’s acrobatics, combined with these weapons, would make him a fantastic mid-range character, who could swap between up close melee and distant projectile spam. Like Nightcrawler, Blade would be a great counterpart to Darkstalkers characters, and his reception could lend towards his introduction into the MCU.

demitri

6.) Demitri

Considered to be the second main character of Darkstalkers, Demitri is a legendary vampire lord, with a taste for the blood of innocent women. Unlike most requested characters, Demitri actually has an official reason for being excluded from so many crossover games: his ultimate attack. Demitri’s ultimate has him transform his enemy into a young woman version of themselves, then proceeding to drain their blood. This would mean Capcom would have to make models of every character as a young woman purely for this attack, which, to be fair, is a ton of work for one character.

If Capcom were to change his ultimate (which I believe most people, myself included, would accept if it meant including him in the game), Demitri could be practically lifted from his countless appearances in Darkstalkers, simply optimized for the Marvel vs Capcom system. Demitri would work well as a fast and close fighter, specializing in doing damage up close, and bailing before taking damage. His appearance in Project X Zone 2 only helps with his Marvel vs Capcom inclusion, as it proves that Capcom still remembers him.

nightcrawler

5.) Nightcrawler

As a fan-favorite X-Men, Nightcrawler is well overdue to appear in Marvel vs Capcom. Nightcrawler, whose real name is Kurt Wagner, was born to the X-Men villain Mystique. After growing up in the circus, Nightcrawler would join the X-Men, and become one of the most beloved members by fans everywhere.

Nightcrawler’s teleportation ability would make him similar to Vergil, as his specialty would be “bamf-ing” behind enemies to catch them off guard with his acrobatics and sword-fighting skills. Nightcrawler’s aesthetic would make him a nice match for any Darkstalkers characters, and his inclusion would be another sign of goodwill, this time to burned X-Men fans.

bass

4.) Bass.EXE

We’ve now seen three different Mega Men, Zero, and Tron Bonne in Marvel vs Capcom. The only two major characters who have yet to appear are Proto Man and Bass, but Bass would be a more unique pick for the series. As Dr. Wily’s ultimate creation, Bass’s power came with arrogance, leading to him ditching Dr. Wily to be angsty and cool on his own. The Battle Network version of Bass would fit best, as not only does he look the coolest, but it would ensure that almost every single Mega Man series is represented.

Bass would play like a mix of X and Zero, using close and long range attacks to put pressure on enemies. Depending on which version of Bass is included, his robotic canine-companion Treble could appear to assist him with moves and grabs. Bass also has different armors that he can switch between, which would perfectly compliment X’s ability to change armors.

daredevil

3.) Daredevil

This pick isn’t cheating, as Daredevil’s only been in an MCU Netflix series, with no current movies under his belt. It’s astonishing that Daredevil has yet to appear in a Marvel vs Capcom game, but his current surge in popularity means there’s no better time to include him. As Matt Murdock, Daredevil is a blind lawyer by day, driven to embrace the legal system after his father’s murder. Daredevil goes on to team up with countless heroes, while introducing or enhancing popular characters like Elektra (who would also be a great pick), and Bullseye.

Daredevil would be a really fun character, as he has no energy beams or flashy super powers. Daredevil would have to rely on his acrobatics and his super senses. Implementing his super senses into battles would be a challenge, but it could definitely prove to be a gameplay mechanic unlike anything seen in previous Vs games. Daredevil’s batons would provide some fantastic long-range attacks, while allowing him to swing across the screen, similar to Spider-Man.

batsu

2.) Batsu

If Darkstalkers is Capcom’s most underrated fighting franchise, Rival Schools is its most forgotten. Choosing a single character from its huge roster is difficult, as almost every character is incredibly well-designed. Ultimately, the main character of the series, Batsu, would fit best. As the stereotypical anime-thug, Batsu excels at fighting people. Other than caring about his mom, and fighting his long-lost father, Batsu doesn’t have a particularly special backstory to go over.

Previously included in Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Batsu would be a completely close-range fighter, dealing out heavy damage through fast and powerful punches, with very little in the way of projectiles. This would allow for a great variety of combos, with an especially melee-heavy set of special attacks. If anything, let’s hope Rival Schools is included somehow.

venom

1.) Venom

Probably the most requested character, Venom is instantly recognizable to any Spider-Man fan. Whether it’s the classic Venom, Mac Gargan’s Venom, or Agent Venom, the bulky black symbiote and his often wild tongue is as iconic as it gets in the Spider-Man universe. Whether he’s a disgruntled reporter, a vengeful private investigator, or a military hero, Venom is worthy of inclusion on status alone.

Venom would be a powerhouse with a moveset that’s evenly divided between physical moves, and symbiote attacks. Using swipes, bites, and punches, Venom could deal massive damage up close, while using his webs to stay in the enemy’s face. For mid-range attacks, the symbiote would take command, with whips, grabs, slashes, and hammers. Even if Agent Venom is chose, these moves can still be used, with a heavier focus on firearms and mobility. Venom has such a variety of moves that he could be any type of fighter, meaning it would crazy of Capcom not to include him.

And those are my top picks for characters that should be in Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. Do you agree, or disagree? Comment with your own choices!
