I’ve never been one for headsets really, at least with console gaming. Having a headset on has always felt “limiting” for lack of a better word, like an extra weight that, while nice sounding, slowly makes my ears and head feel sort of compressed. Maybe it’s because of my Hey Arnold-sized head, maybe it’s because of my weird ears, but either way, I’ve always found headsets to be a pain. The ASTRO A40 TR headset is an exception to this, as it’s one of the very few headsets that I’ve found to actually be both comfortable on my gourd head and crisp and clear to listen to.
Part of this comfort comes from the padding around the ear area, which is big enough to encompass my entire ear. Keep in mind that I have pretty big ears, which means there’s a lot of space for the average person. I find a lot of headsets would press on the outside of my earlobes, leading to frequent readjustments and discomfort. The A40 TR headset completely surrounds my ear, making it feel more like comfortable earmuffs than the average headset. The sound output is stereo, so it isn’t the highest possible quality but it still sounds great and particularly clear.
The hinges on each earpiece have a decent amount of give, though I do wish they could swivel a bit further to better wrap around my head. They aren’t bad by any means, they could just be a bit better. It’s incredibly easy to make the headset size larger, as you just have to slide each earpiece down a stylish metal tube, which has a gap in the middle to show off the coiled cord within. You can make the headset pretty big, but there’s plenty of variety to be had between the biggest and smallest setting.
The microphone, mounted on the left earpiece, is easily adjustable. It swivels forward and can be bent and manipulated due to its rubber/wire composure. The audio quality is quite good, as I tested it by streaming with Reviews Manager Diego, and I came out sounding nice and clear. I’ve found a lot of headset mics to be a bit lacking, so I was quite pleased with the A40 TR’s microphone.
The A40 TR headset is wired, so you can primarily use it through your controller. While the site says the headset is for any console but primarily for PS4, I never noticed anything in the headset itself that was in-line with that. I used the headset with my Switch, phone, and PC, and I had no issues whatsoever. So if the “PS4” line confuses you, I wouldn’t worry about it.
The Final Word
The Astro A40 TR headset is an exceptional headset for any console or mobile device you may want to use it for. It provides ample room for those like myself who have larger heads, and it features impressive audio quality in both input and output. It’s wired, so you’ll have to look elsewhere if wireless is your preference, but the A40 TR headset is a great choice for anyone who wants a comfortable headset with sufficiently high-quality sound.
