Herdling Preview – Okomotive’s Relaxing Cattle Herding Game

Ever since Herdling was revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live, its unique premise immediately piqued my curiosity. After experiencing it firsthand at PAX West, I can confidently say that Herdling is shaping up to be one of the event’s most relaxing and enjoyable titles of the event.

Herdling takes you on a journey

Developed by Okomotive, the creators of the Far series, Herdling continues their tradition of crafting atmospheric, journey-focused games. In their previous titles, you controlled a ship and a train, and now, in Herdling, you guide a herd of magical cattle called Calicorns through the Alpine wilderness. The game centers on the journey of a young boy who, after discovering these creatures, sets off to lead them to the summit of the mountains.

In the demo, I started in a desolate town and was tasked with rounding up each Calicorn. Using a magical wand, I had to guide them in the right direction, though at first, I struggled with steering. It wasn’t until I positioned the boy behind the herd and used the wand more strategically that I managed to corral them properly. By the demo’s end, I had unlocked more exciting abilities, like initiating a thrilling stampede sequence.

As you progress, Herdling offers a variety of biomes, from mountainous regions to lush forests and serene valleys. The game also introduces light environmental puzzles, though the demo’s puzzles were relatively simple, involving tasks like opening gates and avoiding obstacles. However, I can easily see the potential for more challenging elements, like encounters with hostile wildlife, which should add depth to the experience.

Visually, Herdling is stunning. The art style complements the serene atmosphere, with environmental changes reflected in the game’s dynamic score. The shift from calm, ambient tones to sweeping, more dramatic music helps immerse you in each unique setting, making the journey feel both peaceful and meaningful.

Ultimately, Herdling is not a game about complex mechanics but about the experience it offers. Similar to Journey or Flower by thatgamecompany, Herdling focuses on delivering an emotional, meditative adventure. I’m eagerly anticipating its release in 2025 for PC and other consoles yet to be announced. If you’re a fan of tranquil, exploratory games, Herdling is one to keep on your radar.
