When it comes to exceptional game direction, Metaphor: ReFantazio stands out as a masterpiece of cohesive vision and artistic ingenuity.

Best Game Direction – Metaphor: ReFantazio

Spencer: Everything about Metaphor is impressive, but the direction is what goes an especially long way in making it such a special game. From the menus and HUD to the character illustrations and vibes, every corner of the game stands out from its Atlus predecessors and every other game of the RPG genre. It’s an incredibly well-directed game, further providing Atlus’ pedigree in direction itself.

James: Direction can feel vague when it comes to video games, but for me it means every aspect of a game feels like a single cohesive vision. Metaphor: ReFantazio nails that, with incredible art and menu designs, characters that feel at home in the world while still having strong personalities, and Hieronymus Bosch enemies. Those elements should clash, but instead blend together seamlessly for an incredible work of art.

Frank: The Persona team know their way around making a visually interesting, snappy UI to overlay on their stylish worlds and Metaphor: ReFantazio is no different.  Even beyond their signature UI flavor, this game take alot of old fantasy tropes and reimagines them to great success.  I will never accept elves that don’t have little tufts of hair on the end of their ears, ever again.  And neither should you.

Diego: We shouldn’t be surprised that Atlus of all people gave us a game with a slick interface and incredibly well-realized art-direction, but damn was I still surprised at seeing Metaphor in motion. Easily some of the most intentional design I’ve seen in a minute that really swung for the fences. Every inch of that game draws your eyes to either some slick animation or a grotesque creature and is definitely going to be remembered as one of Atlus’ best.

With its bold art direction, innovative UI, and seamless integration of fantastical elements, Metaphor stands as a shining example of the power of thoughtful game direction.
