Step into a haunting world of grief, resilience, and strategic combat as Death Howl, the latest game from Danish indie studio The Outer Zone and 11 bit studios, launches its playable demo today, January 20th. This atmospheric soulslike deck-builder invites players to explore a Nordic-inspired realm steeped in sorrow and survival.
The demo is now live on Steam, giving players an early look at this genre-blending adventure.
A Mother’s Desperate Quest
In Death Howl, you take on the role of Ro, a grieving mother traversing an ethereal, stone-age world in search of her lost son. Each step of Ro’s journey is fraught with challenges, as she faces relentless spirits in grid-based, turn-driven combat. Players must craft, adapt, and refine their decks to survive brutal encounters and unravel Ro’s poignant story.
Explore diverse biomes like the Forest of Howling Shadows and Meadows of Delusion, each offering unique cards, shamanic totems, and fragments of forgotten lore.
Strategy Meets Soulslike Exploration
Malte Burup, Director at The Outer Zone, describes Death Howl as a unique evolution of the deck-builder genre. “By combining strategic deck-building with soulslike exploration and a deeply emotional narrative, we hope to create a game that resonates with players on multiple levels.”
Players will encounter diverse enemies and uncover Ro’s tale as they navigate this world of sorrow and strength.
Demo Available Now
The Death Howl demo is available now on Steam, coinciding with the launch of 11 bit studios’ Publisher Sale.
A full release for Death Howl is planned for later in 2025, but you can get a head start now and wishlist the game to follow its progress.
