Retro shooter fans, get ready—Rendering Ranger: R² is finally getting a proper re-release, and this time, it’s bringing some quality-of-life upgrades to help soften its brutal difficulty. Publisher Ziggurat Interactive has confirmed that the game will include a new Rewind feature, allowing players to undo their mistakes with the push of a button when Rendering Ranger: R² launches on March 20, 2025, for PC (Steam/GOG), PlayStation 4|5, and Nintendo Switch.
What’s New in Rendering Ranger: R² [Rewind]?
Originally released in 1995 as a Super Famicom exclusive in Japan, Rendering Ranger: R² is one of the rarest and most sought-after SNES games. Developed by Manfred Trenz, the mind behind the Turrican series, the game features a mix of Contra-style run-and-gun action and side-scrolling shmup combat, tasking players with repelling an alien invasion.
For its first-ever Western release, Rendering Ranger: R² [Rewind] has been faithfully emulated using Limited Run Games’ Carbon Engine while introducing modern enhancements, including:
- Rewind Feature – Instantly undo mistakes and retry tough sections.
- Save & Continue – No more restarting from scratch—pick up where you left off.
- Optional CRT Filter – Experience the game as it was meant to be played, scanlines and all.
- Bonus Content – Includes the unreleased prototype Targa alongside the original game.
