Lost Skies, the popular co-op open-world survival adventure game from Bossa Games, had a banner week during Steam Next Fest. So much so that the team has decided that Early Access is their next stop for the anticipated release. Bossa Games are known for their Surgeon Simulator series and somewhat popular bread simulation title, I Am Bread. Let’s dive further into Lost Skies.
Lost Skies has you designing and building your own custom airship with up to five friends. You’ll explore four vast, unique floating islands full of ancient ruins using the airship. The airship, referred to specifically as the skyship, acts as home base as well as a warship. In the trailer, you can see flying manta ray style enemies attacking the ship while players defend it, along with building stationary weaponry on the warship. Eventually, we see the players defend themselves from a sort of Nier-style fireball bullet hell scenario making Lost Skies seem like a little more than simply defending the skyship from pests. It looks like the skyship will be attacked by enemies both big and small.
Gamers are always on the hunt for new co-op experiences, and despite the market being full of options, new ones are often difficult to come by. I imagine building a custom skyship with friends and using it to spelunk ancient ruins and fight giant monsters is probably exciting to most. The real test will be continued updates/development, and whether or not it’ll be able to hold player interest. A demo is one thing, Early Access requiring a buy-in is another. On the Steam page, regarding how long the game will remain in Early Access, the developers had this to say:
We’re not putting a firm timeline on Early Access just yet as it really depends on how things go and what we learn from the community along the way. Our focus is on making Lost Skies the best version of itself and let it reach the right level of completeness and polish.
That being said, we are aiming for a 1.0 release later this year.
It’s easy to dismiss what the developer has to say when they’re brand new but an established developer like Bossa Games at least has an understanding and idea of the cost and time it takes to develop a game. Although this seems to be their largest undertaking yet. Still, considering the multiplayer component is already implemented in the game and working, it appears one of the biggest hurdles has already been overcome.
