SB’s Gaming Memories: The Legend of 3D

Back when the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was still in development, I followed the development process as much as I could, relishing every screenshot and Link’s impending jump into 3D. The game was shaping up to be awesome, and I wanted a copy badly.

There was just one problem: I had no N64.

Release day came and went, and the rave reviews kept pouring into my favorite game sites. If this was The Game of the Century, I wanted to play it.

The next summer, I went to visit family on vacation; and my cousins owned a copy of the game. Naturally, I bugged them to at least let me watch the game unfold. With all due respect to Twilight Princess Link, the moment when Adult Link was revealed for the first time made me want to drool.

Finally, it was time for the final showdown with Ganon. Before the batle, my elder cousin pulled me aside and asked if I wanted the honor of delivering the final blow. I eagerly accepted, and was then told to wait until I got the controls.

I cheered as hard as I could as Ganon was worn down. Suddenly, as Zelda held Ganon down with her power, I feel something heavy in my hands: the controls! All that were present counted to three, and I mashed the B button hard, sending Ganon into the great beyond.

We celebrated all through the credits, until my sister and I were presented with two newspaper wrapped boxes, one large, one small. I opened the smaller box to reveal a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time underneath. At first, I was confused–how was I going to play the game if I didn’t have the console to play it on? Then, my sister figured out what the big box was–an N64 of our own! It wasn’t quite a “NINTENDO SIXTY-FOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRR!!!!!!!” moment, but we were both tearing away the wrapping, eager to get at the console inside.

To this day, I still consider The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time my all time favorite. Yet I wonder, will history repeat itself, and I get a Wii and Twilight Princess in that same manner?

Until then,

Once you get a hold on Twlight Princess, we will see if it lives up to the same calibur of experience as Ocarina of Time.

Yeah…the hard part is finding a Wii.
