Need for Speed: Undercover puts you in the fictional Tri-City Bay Area where drivers will take the role of an undercover cop hired for the federal agency, ordered to take down a crime syndicate, and tasked with taking down crime bosses with increasing difficulty.
All the cop chases and highway pursuits that is the pinnacle of the Need for Speed franchise is here. EA Black Box hopes that its new events, improved driving physics, a developed story, and robust customization will make the game more than just another title.
Career mode is based on earning money by winning races in missions and racing events. The money can then be put towards car customization, which will allow drivers to cruise around in new rides. A point system is implemented to keep track of the moves you do during races, the damage caused during a police chase, and the bounties you collect — all of which works as experience to level up in the general sense.
EA has put emphasis on “Hollywood-esque scenes” for Undercover. The game’s world clock is frozen at “Magic Hour” with lens flares and a high contrast to add a visual appeal to the game. A “Heroic” driving engine is utilized to allow players to pull off 180 or 360 degree spins. An arcadey physics engine and a detailed damage model lends itself to breathtaking destructible moments.
Highway Battle race mode involves one driver against another in a race down a busy freeway, a simple concept but fun nonetheless. Players will also be able to cruise around the Tri-City area, in a sandbox-esque fashion, finding themselves in an array of settings across the cities.
Need for Speed Undercover will release this November for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii, and PC. Playstation 2, PSP, and iPhone versions are also in development.
