The Godfather II Preview

The Godfather II will not be a “movie game.” While there will be crossover moments that tie in with the sequel, the gameplay reveals itself in a non-linear fashion, all within the 1960s post-Godfather timeline.

In contrast to the previous game, players will begin as a Don in full control of the Corleone family. Godfather II features a strategic component, in which AI operated families fight for control of territories across all three cities.

The Don’s view allows players to see a 3D strategic map in which territories are displayed. Rival mobs are color coded and contested areas are marked by fires.

Once you complete a mission in a rival territory you will acquire a new racket. Rackets include a variety of respectable businesses such as extortion to drug peddling. The income produced from those rackets will not only fuel your criminal endeavors but also add bonuses to your family. For example, capturing an arms racket rewards the family with an increase in gun clip size.

Each family will have its own branching tree which includes the Made Men. Up to three men can be taken out on missions for backup as each men will specialize in a unique skill such as demolition or engineering. In different scenarios, they can become useful when combined skillfully. These men can be leveled and turn into unique lieutenants.

Dons will be able to allocate guards to defend territories which are then placed into the game as NPC guards. The Don’s View will allow players to see rival guard counts which will be useful to note for future takeovers. Further expansion of your revenue stream will require a balanced management of available resources.

In game, constant updates will be displayed on screen, letting the player know what territories have been captured by rival families. While each family won’t eliminate themselves, players can take on a mission to eradicate a family off the map that will result in the increase of his or her own empire. A multiplayer mode is planned for Godfather II and while speculation of this boardgame type component may be implemented, EA has affirmed its silence on the mode.

As with the movie, the game will offer violent action and mature themes. Stippers, torture, and gunplay are just some of the elements that incorporate into this. During the demonstration, complex plot elements, various approaches to territorial takeovers, and family warfare are several interesting things to note.

The Godfather II is set for February 2009 release on PC, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3. We will keep you informed as we follow this title up to its release.
