From Console Screen to Silver Screen: Where’s Zelda?

December 7, 2008 by SparklingBlue Editorials, Features 9 Comments

I was browsing Yahoo and discovered an article about some upcoming game movies. The usual suspects were there (eg. Prince of Persia, Halo, WoW, and even The Sims), but there was one game series I feel needed to be on the list: Zelda.

Considering how big the Lord of the Rings series turned out to be, I could imagine Link on the silver screen.

For series fans that whine that a movie would have to give Link a voice, take a look at Disney’s WALL-E for a great example of a movie that has very little dialogue from the main character. Likewise, if you dread seeing Link portrayed by a real person, there’s no rule that says every game movie has to be live action.–in fact, Hyrule seems to work best in animation considering the magical elements that would make a live version be a cheese fest: the fairies, the monsters, and some effects of items.

Secondly, I would want the crew to at least play some of the Zelda games before settling on a script so that they have a feel for the mythos and retain some authenticity when they bring Hyrule to life. I don’t want a potential Zelda movie to be a complete copy of a game, but a story in its own right that could be believeable as a game (something the Mario movie forgot.)

I will continue looking foward to the day when I can hear that beloved theme song in a theater and see on the screen The Legend of Zelda: The Movie…but until that day comes, I can dream.

Do you remember the terrible Zelda cartoon? Man, that was bad!

There were good parts about it. The music and sound effects.

      • Yes, that's true.

  2. Why yes, I remember that–had a little game to see how many times Link would say "Well, excuse me" every episode.

I strongly believe this isn't the wisest idea.

  4. Vroom says:

dude there's just some movies that would not work: zelda is one of them, halo is another…you just need to imagine what the movie would be like, how it would be received, how rediculous it might look in commercials. zelda is great the way it is

  5. Roivas says:

99% of all movies are terrible wastes of time, I wouldn't take that kind of risk with one of the most treasured franchises in gaming.

  6. David Macphail says:

There are a HUGE amount of video – game based movies currently either in production or pre – production other than the ones you mentioned:

    God Of War
    Bioshock
    Gears Of War
    Metal Gear Solid
    Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
    Assasins Creed
    Splinter Cell
    Pacman (WTF???)
    Spyro The Dragon
    Mortal Kombat
Street Fighter: Legend of Chun – Li

I don't know about everyone else here but i'd really like to see another Final Fantasy movie……….

I don't see Zelda working. Though Wall-E works as a silent film, not having Link talk won't work in a movie. The reason why Link doesn't talk is that you are Link, you play Link, you save the world, save Zelda, yada yada yada. In a film you see it through a third person, you aren't Link, someone else is. So you can't see what's going through his head if he isn't talking, which is bad in a film, you need that connection. Wall-E worked because it was light on story and had a lot of personality in the animation.

Matt Hazard: Blood Bath & Beyond Review

The original Matt Hazard had the potential to be a great game, good voice work with the likes of Neil Patrick Harris and Will Arnett. A brilliant backstory and marketing campaign which broke the fourth wall entirely, and the story while thin was entertaining and amusing. The sole problem came in the gameplay department which [...]

SB Plays The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks

When the newest entry in the beloved Zelda series was announced earlier this year, people were both excited and skeptical. How well would a train in the Zeldaverse go over with fans? Would the gameplay be a replay of Phantom Hourglass, with its infamously numerous trips through the Temple of the Ocean King?
Now that the [...]
