Hothead Games Q+A

As you could all tell from my Deathspank review I absolutely adored the game, so you know I was as giddy as a schoolgirl when I was given the chance to ask them a few questions in a Q+A recently. Although I will add that they suspiciously decided to not answer my question of whether there will be a downloadable expansion involving a whole new area filled with orphaned bacon, so I’m going to take that as a definite yes.

1.) What kind of inspiration did the team pull from while designing Deathspank?

DeathSpank has always been labeled as “Diablo meets Monkey Island” so obviously those two games were big influences, but we also looked a games like World of Warcraft and other action-based games. – Darren Evenson, Lead Designer

2.) Where there any equipment/weapons or specific features that were cut from the final game that you wish had stayed?

We did cut several weapons, but to be honest, the game is better off without them. We generally cut stuff that just that didn’t work the way we hoped it would, or that would take too much time and effort to get working right. – Darren Evenson, Lead Designer

3.) I loved the phone number you could call and had sent it to many of my friends, lots of them purchased the game simply based off the phone call. Eventually many of my friends where sending it to their friends and it became one big thing going around. When the team sat down to come up with the phone conversation how did they go about doing so? Also were there any other ideas the team had for advertising the game?

We sent that challenge over to one of our designers and he wrote the whole thing. I don’t remember where the initial idea came from exactly. Another idea was that we were going to have all the developers at PAX walking around in nothing but purple thongs. We received some resistance to the idea, but this year for sure. – Hamish Millar, Producer

4.) What was the team’s favorite food to munch on?

Breast milk. Just kidding, most of us have moved onto formula. – Darren Evenson, Lead Designer

Personally, I’d love to have a Deathspank inspired purple thong and would totally rock out with anyone wearing one at PAX. Actually just send one to my home Hothead so I can save on airline tickets and I’ll just rock out in them while playing Deathspank.
