For those going to pick up a copy this week for Capcom’s Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, be aware of the added statement on the cartridge: “Saved data on this software cannot be reset.”
It means that pre-owned buyers of The Mercenaries 3D will be playing someone else’s saved game, that includes any balancing extras when the game is completed. Its not unheard of for publishers to include copy-protection, online game passes, and other initiatives to discourage gamers from buying used games, however, Capcom has enacted a creative precedent to this trend. Presuming that everything will be unlocked in a used copy, gamers expecting an challenging experience playing through stages with end-game weapons will probably not have fun at all.
Who knows if this policy will curb used game sales or prevent gamers from going out their way to pirate the game instead.
UPDATE: Capcom has released the following statement, regarding that secondhand (used) game sales were not a factor in their decision to include undeleteable game saves.
In Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, all mission progress is saved directly to the Nintendo 3DS cartridge, where it cannot be reset. The nature of the game invites high levels of replayability in order to improve mission scores. In addition, this feature does not remove any content available for users. Secondhand game sales were not a factor in this development decision, so we hope that all our consumers will be able to enjoy the entirety of the survival-action experiences that the game does offer.
