Imagining 3D gaming is already difficult to wrap my head around but 4D? You’re kidding right? Developer Marc ten Bosch created Miegakure, an IndieCade finalist, a puzzle platformer that brings players into the fourth dimension. [photo – Me trolling Philip who is playing Miegakure]
Its a concept that’s initially hard to comprehend but bear with me. In a typical 2D platformer, a character moves in relation to width and height. Though recent games like the Paper Mario franchise have made it possible to explore 2D within a three dimensional plane. Now comes Miegakure which translates to “hide and seek” in Japanese. The idea is to take a three dimensional plane and allow for the player to manipulate objects in the world in order to go beyond 3D. In order to facilitate this, the player is granted a special ability to move through walls and objects to solve complex puzzles.
As I watched my editor play through the levels, the end goal is relatively simple – reach the exit gate in a designated spot. However, the dimensional switching substantiates the experience when you discover that the blocks that you push back and forth are moved between each terrain. Any doubters should watch the video for themselves. Miegakure isn’t set for release right now nor a demo but the Marc has stated on the game’s website that he plans to release them on the consoles and the operating systems of PC, Mac, and Linux sometime in the near future.
