A leading Japanese newspaper, Nikkei, is estimating a Nintendo Switch launch price of ¥25,000, according to translation and reporting by Engadget. A ¥25,000 Nintendo Switch would match the launch price of the Nintendo Wii, and if launch-price-matching were to make it stateside, this would make for a $250 USD launch price for the Nintendo Switch.
Nikkei has a track record of accuracy in estimating past launch prices, including the Nintendo DSi and the Wii U, Engadget notes. The Wii U launched at ¥26,500 originally in Japan, and $299 in the United States, making it fairly safe to say the U.S. launch price would fall somewhere between $250-299, and quite competitive with the current MSRP of $299 for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, if the Nikkei numbers hold.
Later this week on January 12, Nintendo will be livestreaming a Nintendo Switch presentation for consumers and press, to provide more details and demonstrate the console, and possibly confirm a few March 2017 launch titles. As far as announcements of this kind go, price is not expected to be announced just yet.
Nintendo’s livestream will take place on YouTube and Twitch at 8PM Pacific Time, 11PM Eastern Time on January 12. Check back then to MonsterVine for continued coverage.
