Lego The Incredibles Review – Fairly Credible

Lego The Incredibles takes a few small steps forward for the Lego franchise/genre. While it has less content than in most Lego games and a padded character roster, the minor upgrades and simplified open world make Lego The Incredibles an overall fun package.

I’ve got to say, I didn’t expect The Incredibles of all things to get a Lego game in the near future. With only two films under its belt, it’s a franchise that seemed short on content when compared to other Lego titles like Marvel and Star Wars. While this lack of source material certainly shows in places, Lego The Incredibles is a fun and completely sufficient Lego game.

Lego The Incredibles covers both Incredibles films while providing small additional stories in its open world. You have to play through Incredibles 2 before you can go through the first movie, which is an odd choice. I can only assume this is because the sequel is currently in theaters, which makes sense. I do wish I could pick the order though, if only to play as Syndrome in the open world far earlier. As is the trend with modern Lego games, the story mode is fully voiced. The cutscenes have lots of slapstick and goofy visual humour, which is fitting for a game based on toys. Some of the stand-in voice actors and actresses are pretty weak unfortunately, as a few characters sound nothing like their movie counterparts.

If you’ve ever played a Lego game, you should have a pretty good idea of what to expect when it comes to gameplay. As one of many characters from the world of The Incredibles, you traverse a number of Lego-built environments while fighting enemies and solving puzzles. It’s the type of game that’s easy to jump into, making it the perfect game to play with kids or after a long day. There’s lots to do though, as the open world is filled with side-quests, Crime Waves, and collectibles. The new Crime Wave feature has you battle original supervillains while saving civilians and completing side-missions, which adds some life to the overworld. Saving people while battling goofy villains makes you feel like a superhero, so it’s a welcome addition.

If anything, including other Pixar characters showed that Lego The Incredibles would have worked better as a Lego Pixar game.

The roster of playable characters is stretched pretty thin, as there are only so many named characters in the two Incredibles films. A substantial chunk of the roster is made up of unseen and fairly generic superheroes and villains or random civilians. There’s little incentive to unlock these nobodies, as you’ll unlock most of the interesting characters through the main story.

The major exception to this is the inclusion of other Pixar characters, all of whom are unlocked by completing Crime Waves. From Toy Story’s Woody to Coco’s Miguel, every Pixar film is represented. If anything, including other Pixar characters showed that Lego The Incredibles would have worked better as a Lego Pixar game.

The Final Word
While it’s smaller than other similar games, the minor upgrades and simple fun of Lego The Incredibles make it a basic but fun Lego game. While it won’t do much for those who aren’t fond of The Incredibles, fans of the movies won’t regret picking this one up.
