Nintendo of America has announced plans to drop the retail price of the Nintendo 3DS handheld from $249.99 to $169.99 in an aggressive marketing push beginning August 12.
In a near $100 price drop, Nintendo promised early adopters of the handheld that they were not forgotten. Current 3DS owners will receive 20 free downloadable games of their choosing from the Nintendo eShop, this offer is available until 11:59 ET on August 11.
These users will also be registered into the 3DS Ambassador program which is outlined as follows: Starting Sept 1, Nintendo 3DS owners are able to download 10 NES Virtual Console games free of charge and before they are available to the general public. Titles include: Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber and The Legend of Zelda. Meanwhile, before the end of 2011, these Ambassadors will get exclusive access to 10 GBA Virutal Console games not available to the public. They are Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong.

Actually, it looks like the 20 free games are set, they’re not of our choosing.
