After an unexpected delay announced on the day it was supposed to be released, the Wikipad gaming tablet is back on track with a spring 2013 release planned with a new 7 inch form factor and a much lower $249 price point.
The tablet with a controller shell we got hands on with back in September has just gotten a redesign. Instead of the original 10.1 inch tablet, its been downsized to a much more manageable seven inches. With the reduction in size comes a price reduction down to $249.99 from $499.99. This seems to be a smart reaction to the constant announcement of new android consoles being released and makes it much easier to pick up and compete with upcoming devices.
No date has been announced for the 7″ and a 10″ model is planned to follow with “evolved” hardware specs (tegra 4?).
Here is their official statement on the abrupt delay:
Our delay was due to the discovery of a flaw in the pilot production run. This was neither a mistake of our excellent design team nor a fault of our incredible manufacturing partners. We needed the additional time to improve the controller based on those discoveries. During the delay, and after carefully listening to people who voiced their opinions regarding our initial price point, we decided to alter our product roadmap and make the 7in tablet at $249.
