Games Inspiring Movies: Did Zelda Inspire “Pirates”?

It’s a fact that when a new hot movie premieres in theaters, a game based on or inspired by said movie is on the shelves not long after. But what I want to ask is “Can the ‘movies inspire games’ tact be taken the other way–in other words, can a game inspire a movie?”

Before we go any further, I would like to point out that for the purposes of this article, movies based on games or where games factor heavily in the plot do not count. What I am looking for are sequences in games that later turn up in a movie.

One example is the Ganondorf playing the organ scene towards the end of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. If you own Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, doesn’t the scene of Davy Jones at the organ look very similar to the scene in Zelda? I know that we’re dealing with two completely different mediums that were released nine years apart from each other. But when I first saw that scene, I couldn’t help but wonder if someone on the Pirates crew is/was a fan of Zelda.

Let’s compare:

The famous scene from Zelda:

The sequence from “Pirates”:

Coincidence? You make the call.

You do bring up a good point, it’s just the similarity between the Zelda version and Pirates version of that trope made me wonder if one inspired the other

    BIOSHOCK THE MOVIE.
Halo, Street Fighter, and many others, but I can see what you’re getting at.

But what if it’s not? Have you seen other movies where it does that too? The evil guy in movies usually play the organ.

Ok, well not usually, but I’ve seen many movies that do that. Just saying.
