Did you ever look back at the PSP and ask yourself, “Why UMD’s?” I know I have, I think that’s where the PSP fails. Quite frankly, the PSP never appealed to my tastes either because of the lack of a second analog stick.
Adding Memory Sticks to the picture, now that was great, and the concept, also great, but the storage, lacking. I don’t really know of anyone who still puts movies out on UMD’s. I even forgot what “UMD” stood for, is it “Ultra Media Disc”? Because it’s not that ultra.
“I think we definitely thought about it,” he said. “I think that’s the trend moving forward.”
“I think the UMD has struggled,” he said. “And that’s an understatement. That’s been a very frustrating thing. I don’t think (UMD movies) were handled very effectively.”
He thinks people said, “lets see if we can get people to pay $20 or $30 for crappy movies with less content.”
What with news ways allowing the PSP to actually become great, such as the new Video Store and quality games being published for it. The new digital movies are bringing a new issue to the table, where are we fitting all of this if we’re making it portable? Great question, I think with the PSP being used more effectively, that the UMD will die and eventually the digital movies will reign.
Tretton made it known that a PSP with a hard drive was very possible and we could be seeing one in the future. If this is the case, I hope they add a second analog stick and make use of the HDD and somehow incorporate Mini-BD’s, but that seems unlikely right now, I can dream, but it doesn’t make it reality.
