Brendan McNamara has revealed that he is working on a new game titled Whore of the Orient (termed for the port city of Shanghai), in production at Kennedy Miller Mitchell, a production studio headed by George Miller (Mad Max, Happy Feet, Happy Feet 2).
McNamara, along with former Team Bondi employees who are now employed at KMM, garnered praise by Miller on the new project calling it “one of the greatest untold stories of the twentieth century” and has given development duties to the Mad Max video game as well.
Apparently the overhead for producing the game is pushing the studio forward. The Warner Bros backed Mad Max remarked its potential, “the cost of a film may be $170 million – twice that to market it – whereas the basic cost of making a game might be 10% of that.” Former Team Bondi employees who found haven in the KMM studio moved on to produce a sequel about tap dancing penguins. “What’s fascinating, though, is that Team Bondi immediately went to work on Happy Feet Two. People can move from a game to a movie and be completely at home, because it’s the same skills, process – the same game.” However, those Team Bondi employees may soon-to-be former KMM employees according to a report stating the lackluster reception of Happy Feet Two at the box office and the over budget production has led to widespread layoffs and a studio closure at KMM.
Let us hope, for McNamara’s sake, that Whore of the Orient does not produce the level of collateral damage caused with the release of LA Noire earlier this year.
