Have you ever been playing a game and suddenly thought “Wow, I’d like to go on an adventure like this in real life?” Well rest assured you’re not the only person whose mind this has crossed before. Below we’ve compiled a list of five games that make us want to drop the controller and go on a real life adventure. You know, minus all the danger, and other potentially fatal hazards. To earn a spot on this list, the game must already have been released at the time of this writing, so if you’re looking for a list of upcoming games, stay tuned for a future article.
Minecraft
What more can I say about Minecraft that you don’t already know. If you’re one of the few people that doesn’t know what Minecraft is at this point, you must not play video games. Minecraft is a procedurally generated sandbox where the game world is made out of breakable cubes. These cubes are made of different materials that are used to build shelter and craft tools, which are used to mine for even more precious resources. If you so desire you can even ride saddled pigs. The real urge to adventure comes from playing and exploring your world, and the worlds of others’ with your friends. Whether it’s exploring in the underground caverns or passing through the nether portal, Minecraft makes you want to go adventuring. With Minecraft Story Mode coming soon from Telltale Games, it will be interesting to see how the series adapts to a story driven narrative.
Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag
Assassin’s Creed is a polarizing franchise; you either love or hate these games. However, most people can agree that Black Flag is one of the best installments in the Assassin’s Creed video game series. Who doesn’t love being a pirate?Swashbuckling, naval warfare, epic battles and more open sea exploration than you can shake a stick at. Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag is a pirate lovers dream come true. It makes me want to soak up the sun in the Caribbean. I can almost smell the coconut rum now. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is looming on the horizon and I’m hoping Ubisoft can strike gold once more.
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
Drake’s Deception is another game on this list that is part of a larger franchise, so it stands to reason that everyone’s answer could be different as to which iteration is superior. I can understand if you like the first Uncharted better than Uncharted 3 if you’re a purist, since it’s the game that started it all, but in my opinion the winner is Uncharted 3. Regardless of which Uncharted game is your favorite, the series takes players on adventures across the globe, with beautifully scripted moments and set pieces that look like something straight out of a big budget hollywood film. I’d love to visit some of the places that Nathan Drake gets to explore, but I don’t know if I’d be doing all that platforming and climbing without some sort of belay. Safety first, after all. With The Nathan Drake Collection available now and Uncharted 4 in the early part of 2016, players will get a chance to step back into the shoes of Nathan Drake on the best looking adventure yet.
Tomb Raider (2013)
The Tomb Raider series of yesteryear is great when you consider the limitations of the hardware it was developed for. The graphics and controls that we were all used to during that era of gaming were clunky and chunky compared to games of today. 2013’s Tomb Raider is an epic reimagining that breathes new life into the Tomb Raider franchise. This new reboot starts the series over with the origin story of how Lara Croft went from being an ordinary woman, to the established tomb raider that she always was in the older games. The result is a very gritty, often times dark action-adventure game that puts you on the edge of your seat every time you play. Tomb Raider is a free download currently (the month of October) for Xbox Live Gold subscribers on the Xbox One, so get it while you can. Then get ready, because on November 10th, Rise of the Tomb Raider will be unleashed upon the world.
Fallout: New Vegas
I love Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas equally, but I’m going to give the slight edge to New Vegas, because: Vegas baby! Fallout: New Vegas was welcomed with open arms in 2010 by gamers worldwide who had already chewed up and spit out all that Fallout 3 had to offer. Even though the post apocalyptic wasteland doesn’t sound like an ideal situation, there’s just something about wandering around the world of the Fallout universe that keeps gamers coming back for more. Fallout 4 is only a few weeks away, so get ready to put on your Pip Boy and head back out into the wasteland. “War… War never changes.”
