Indivisible Preview

From the developers of critically acclaimed fighting game, Skullgirls, Indivisible combines the frantic action of the fighting game and hack and slash genres, with the challenging environments of a 2D-platformer.

Inspired by classic games such as Valkyrie Profile and Super Metroid, Indivisble lets you play as Ajna, a tomboy martial artist, as she recruits many different characters, known as incarnations, in her quest to catch her animal friend. After playing through the alpha twice, I can confidently say that Indivisible is a remarkably enjoyable experience, with the potential to be a real hit with fans of fast-paced gameplay, and action RPGs.

The moment you start the game, you’ll likely be entranced by the game’s beautifully colourful visuals. Every background, character, and object in the game is vibrant and full of life. Each of the characters’ movements are satisfyingly smooth, with each different attack providing a fast and dazzling display. Attacks range from a barrage of soaring arrows and fists, to animal-shaped magic, and whipping cloth strands.

The visuals are perfectly complimented by the tremendous and lively audio-work in the alpha. The music is crisp and stimulating, both when it’s relaxing and trance-like while platforming, or quick and hectic in battle. The voices all fit their characters perfectly. The Archer Zebei is intense but enthusiastic, while the Shamaness Razmi is sombre and intimidating. Each voice brings the already dynamic characters to life, and gives each a simple, but distinct personality.

The gameplay is not only incredibly enjoyable, but refreshing when compared to most RPGs. I love the tried and true turn-based RPG system, but the gameplay of Indivisible is astonishingly different. This takes some getting used to if you’re accustomed to regular RPGs, but once you’re used to the gameplay’s rhythm, it’s a genuinely entrancing experience.

Each party member is assigned to a button or key, and each has an action bar that fills constantly, allowing the character to attack. When you press a button, that button’s character will launch an attack, with different attacks occurring when a direction is held alongside the attack.

The attacks are all diverse and character specific.  The attacks can all be launched simultaneously if each character has a full action bar. This provides an explosively satisfying visual experience, as all four characters launch their flashy and very-well animated attacks.

Outside of battle, Indivisible is full of well laid out platforming with interesting, original ideas mixed in. Partway through the alpha, you find an axe. Not only can you use the axe in combat, you can use it to hop up walls. This provides you with a few different ways of getting to your objectives and helps keep the game from feeling boring in-between battles.

Indivisible is best played with a controller. Having actual buttons in a diamond-shape, the same organization that the characters are in, makes the gameplay much more accessible and fun. Though Indivisible can be played with a keyboard, it feels awkward and uncomfortable, which detracts  from the experience.

Indivisible is a refreshingly frantic take on RPGs with some great and unique platforming. If the IndieGoGo campaign is fully funded, it has the potential to be a truly unique and enjoyable experience.
