MonsterVine Game of the Year Awards 2018 – Day 1

Day 1 of MonsterVine’s 2018 Game of the Year Awards begins with our choices for Biggest Surprise, Best Narrative/Story, and Best Multiplayer.

An example of Spencer’s many HR violations

Biggest Surprise – Spencer is still not fired

Will: Among the great atrocities of 2018 is the fact that Spencer still continues to have gainful employment at MonsterVine.com. (Diego as the HR manager — back me up here). I only wish Austin the very best in handling this delicate situation.

Spencer: I have no idea as to why I’m still employed. Has anyone on the staff seen an episode of Kingdom Barfs (our Kingdom Hearts let’s play, subscribe and like)? That show alone should be evidence to blacklist me from the entire industry, and yet here I am. Commenting on my own roast like a lunatic, or more accurately, MonsterVine’s resident lunatic.

Diego: As MonsterVine’s self-appointed HR manager I can confirm I’ve gotten, and continue to receive as of this writing, countless complaints against Spencer. He’s made offensive jokes to our cherished progerian readers, relentlessly made a mockery of Austin’s previous staff position of Senior Manager, and keeps calling us at three in the morning to talk about Chris-Chan. He’s my Earth-Y counterpart however and I fear if I fire him I’d be firing myself as well and I can’t do that. Not in this economy!

Shannon: Spencer hangs on, the booger you can’t quite reach, the dingleberry you can’t quite wipe away. How does he do it? The world may never know.

Austin: Spencer? Is that guy still here? I think I blocked him across the board. This would explain why the site continues to have an influx of anime content. I have the power to fix this. Check back next year.

Runner Up: Pokemon Let’s Go, Spider-Man, DUSK, Spyro: The Reignited Trilogy, Rimworld, Deltarune

Best Narrative/Story – Red Dead Redemption 2

Diego: I haven’t beaten this game yet but that fishing mission is a 10/10 in storytelling.

Shannon: This game captures the narrative heft of Kid Rock’s epic hit “Cowboy” and for that alone it should be celebrated.

Austin: A follow up to the only game that has ever captured the feeling of the western wilderness that I grew up exploring. Red Dead Redemption 2 takes the formula laid out by the last one and amplifies them tenfold, wrapped in a package that exemplifies storytelling within interactive entertainment.

Runner-Up: Yakuza Kiwami 2, Life is Strange 2, Return of the Obra Dinn, Torna

Best Multiplayer – Sea of Thieves

Diego: Sea of Thieves is a game that (still) doesn’t really have much to it, but I’d be a liar if I said it didn’t give me some of my favorite multiplayer moments of the year. From forming alliances with unsuspecting players only to immediately betray them and rush to cash in the loot, to drunkenly goofing around with my pals on the ship, there’s a lot of fun to be had in Sea of Thieves if you sail out looking for it.

Shannon: Sometimes a game’s not exactly full of content, but it’s fun anyway. This is a great game for griefing, trolling, and goofing around with friends.

Austin: Sea of Thieves is a game that can yield pure joy, but it takes a good crew to get any enjoyment out of it. Don’t make the mistake of approaching this non-traditional (see other comments about lack of content) game alone, you must go with friends or be prepared to make friends along the way.

Runner-Up: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Dragon Ball FighterZ
