Coffee Talk Impressions: An Original Blend of Sweet Comfort

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a game in public, played it, and wanted to buy it. Immediately. But Toge Productions’ Coffee Talk comforts like the first, warm sip of coffee on a rainy night, and I’m already eager for my second cup.

Coffee Talk takes place in a coffee shop nestled in an alternate Seattle, filled with humans, aliens, elves, and other unworldly creatures. You play as Sergio, the late-night café owner, and welcome customers with warm drinks and a shoulder to lean on. Most of the game revolves around listening to their problems, but not necessarily offering a solution (something I especially related to as an introvert). Instead, Sergio serves drinks to fit his customers’ needs according to their conversations.

While the minimal gameplay (and emphasis on narrative) is reminiscent of a visual novel, what separates Coffee Talk is the drink crafting. After some time interacting with a customer, you’re prompted to brew them a drink. Your Drink Recipes book starts empty, so you’ll have to genuinely think about what you’re brewing—especially since storylines can change according to how you treat and serve your customers. What’s nice, though, is that you can experiment with recipes before you serve them, so you never feel overly pressured and can craft with ease.

The jazzy, lo-fi music, soft colors, and pixel art also do wonders to relax you. It’s like the developers took lofi hip hop radio (you’re welcome) and made it into a game. They’ve successfully created a world I’d actually want to live in. And? The character interactions feel so real. Like I was actually there, in the coffee shop, connecting with other city souls that struggle to sleep at night, comforting them even in the smallest way—with a cup all my own.

The entire demo was just…soothing. And this is coming from someone who experienced it in the middle of an overcrowded, highly active showcase. I imagine it’s even more so at home, with your own cup of coffee or tea.

Despite having less than 30 minutes with it, I can tell Coffee Talk has a lot of heart—and I’m thoroughly invested in the world and its characters. Honestly, I’ve never been this excited for a release. And while there’s no official release date, you can still download the demo and feel its charm for yourself.
