Best of 2019 Awards – Best Atmosphere

Best Atmosphere – Control

Shannon: Best grim near-future game since Deus Ex and I am a sucker for “guns but also magic powers, however you want to call them.” Please let me mess around in gloomy cityscapes more.

Nick: You want to know why I think the baby Alan Wake and Quantum Break had has the best atmosphere?

Samantha: No one told me this game was going to feel at all Lovecraftian, but it does, and I love it. The whole creepy, unsettling atmosphere is top-notch.

Danny: Attention to creating atmosphere is one of the most important things that can make a game excel in my eyes. While I’ve yet to delve deep with Control (as I’m still exploring the Stephen King-inspired climate of Remedy’s Alan Wake), the bits I’ve played have proven that the development team cared tremendously about constructing a specific vibe in storytelling tone and environmental design.
