Best Story – Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Spencer: There’s something truly touching about the story of Like a Dragon, tucked away in the Yakuza drama and abundant silliness. It’s a game about a great guy who assembles an unlikely group of outcasts to do some good– a pleasant story to experience after a year like this past one. It’s gripping, funny, and endearing all at once, and I highly recommend you play it for yourself. 

Sean: The story is the perfect place to enjoy more Yakuza while also being a great place to start. There’s a level of self-awareness that flows throughout but never goes beyond the line of becoming arrogant. Funny, serious, engaging, and perfectly balanced. 

Joe: A great JRPG in the vein of classics like Dragon Quest. You play as former bandit Ichiban Kasuga who is betrayed by his clan and left for dead. Forming a party of a nomadic mage, a former member of the town watch, and tough as nails shopkeep, you set off on a grand adventure of self discovery. Along the way, you deal with devious thieves guilds, rival bandit clans, and nefarious lords wishing to take the kingdom for themselves. 

Will: Yakuza is one of those games where the balance of serious drama and absurd silliness lends to a great overarching story. For newcomers, you don’t need to play the past games to get it. Like a Dragon welcomes players with open arms into the world of Ichinjo with Ichiban and his party of lovable delinquents that you’ll come to love over the course of the story. 

Frank: A bunch of homeless dudes get together and work jobs, uncovering political intrigue while hitting construction equipment with bats, and giant roombas with tasers.  Ichiban is a true hero. Omelette best mascot 2020.
